TV Host Ahn Sun-young Apologizes After IELTS Complaint Backfires Online

Broadcaster Ahn Sun-young issued a public apology on Instagram after a complaint she posted about missing her IELTS exam drew widespread criticism instead of sympathy.
On the 9th, Ahn posted to her Instagram Story saying she had been barred from entering the exam hall after arriving past the 8:50 a.m. cutoff for a 9:00 a.m. test. She wrote that she had circled a one-way street eight times looking for parking before finally getting a spot — only to be turned away at the door. She added that when she asked, "Can't you let me in since I'm here?" a staff member replied, "That's exactly why you should come early." Ahn called the response "completely correct" but said she had cleared her schedule with difficulty to take the exam, and noted the registration fee runs 300,000 won.
The post drew little public sympathy. Commenters pointed out that the exam's official rules require all applicants to complete ID verification and be seated between 8:15 and 8:50 a.m., with entry barred after that cutoff. Responses included: "Your schedule is your problem — rules are rules," "If they let one person in, they'd have to let everyone in. Is she expecting celebrity privileges?" and "Did she think posting on social media would get her inside?"
Ahn deleted the original post and followed up the next day with an apology. "Arriving late to the exam hall without adequately familiarizing myself with the test regulations is entirely my fault," she wrote. "I sincerely apologize to the exam officials who followed protocol, and to the other test-takers who prepared under the same rules." She said she had posted the original complaint "emotionally, out of frustration" and had since concluded it was "reckless" behavior. "Through the criticism and feedback from many people, I was able to reflect on my shortcomings," she added. "I will act more carefully going forward so this does not happen again."
